Mental Health Awareness Month: Why Support Beyond the Mat Matters

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time that invites us to pause and reflect on how we’re truly doing beneath the surface of daily life. As a yoga teacher, I often talk about nervous system regulation and how practices like breathwork, movement, and mindfulness can help address stress and anxiety. Yoga can be a powerful tool for grounding, reconnecting, and creating space for a busy mind. But it’s also important to acknowledge that yoga, while supportive, is not always enough on its own.
There are times when stress becomes chronic, anxiety feels persistent, or life experiences run deeper than what self-regulation tools can fully address. In those seasons, additional support can make a meaningful difference. Speaking with a trained mental health professional can offer perspective, structure, and care that goes beyond what we can do alone.
Therapy is one more way we can care for our minds when something feels off. Just as we wouldn’t expect physical tension to disappear without attention, our emotional and mental wellbeing also deserves care and support. Accessible options, including online counseling services, have made it easier for more people to begin that journey in a way that fits their lives and schedules.
The most important thing to remember is that you do not have to manage everything on your own. Support is available, and it is valid to seek it. Whether through yoga, therapy, community, or a combination of these, addressing mental health is not a single path. It is a layered and deeply personal process.
Wherever you find yourself in your journey today, make sure to give your body AND mind the wholistic attention they both deserve.
